Visual Identity for Līvāni’s 100th Anniversary
Līvāni existed as a settlement as far back as the Stone Age. More than 1,000 years ago, a settlement of merchants and artisans called Dubna was established along the ancient Viking waterway, on the banks of the Dubna River at its confluence with the Daugava. It was part of the ancient Latgalian kingdom of Jersika, ruled by King Visvaldis, where the origins of the red-white-red colors of Latvia’s flag and the state itself can also be found— Latvia – the name (Letia – from the Latin “Lettia”).
The year 1289 can be tentatively considered the year of Līvāni’s founding, as this was when a fortified settlement—Dubna Castle—was first mentioned in historical documents. The origins of modern-day Līvāni, however, date back to 1533, when the then-landowner, German Baron Jurgens Līvens, built a manor house that he named Līvenhof.
